Decision-to-Search Reduction: From Oracles to Solutions

This document explains how the motzkinstraus package implements the classical decision-to-search reduction from computational complexity theory, transforming Motzkin-Straus decision oracles into constructive algorithms that find actual maximum cliques and independent sets.

Theoretical Foundation

The Decision vs. Search Paradigm

In computational complexity theory, we distinguish between two types of problems:

  • Decision Problem: Given a graph G and integer k, does G contain a clique of size k? (YES/NO answer)
  • Search Problem: Given a graph G, find a maximum clique in G (constructive answer)

The decision-to-search reduction is a fundamental technique that shows how any algorithm solving the decision version can be used to solve the search version with only polynomial overhead.
